Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the brainchild of Jack Thorne and showing in New York this winter. He authored the original play with some assistance from the original series’ author J.K. Rowling and beloved theater director John Tiffany. The original Jack Thorne script initially only contained a frugal two acts. But the creators expanded it to four for an all-consuming theatrical experience that audiences would always hold dear.
This Harry Potter play adaptation begins when Albus Potter meets Scorpios Malfoy on their way to Hogwarts. While Albus cannot match his father’s heroic reputation, Scorpios blunders his own biased distinction as a death eater’s offspring or the circulating rumors of being Voldemort’s child.
Each character grapples with relatable coming-of-age challenges like creating an image that diverges from family histories and correcting the previous generation’s sins. They hope to craft a better future for themselves and their cohorts. Their approach involves exploiting a time turner so that they can return to the past and keep Cedric Diggory — one of Voldemort’s targets — alive.
